Mentoring & Professional Development

At BCSD, we help educators build confidence, strengthen their practice, and grow throughout their careers. First-time educators are paired with trained, experienced mentors during their first year and receive at least 30 hours of mentor contact throughout the school year.

Our Induction and Mentoring Program includes professional learning sessions, classroom observations, reflective conversations, and opportunities to learn from experienced colleagues. Teachers receive practical guidance with lesson planning, classroom management, instructional technology, student assessment, and family communication. The mentoring relationship is confidential and focused on support and professional growth.

School and district professional development opportunities encourage continued learning and collaboration, helping educators strengthen their skills and meet students’ needs.

The Induction and Mentoring district coordinators direct the implementation and oversight of the Induction and Mentoring program. Kelly Shealy and Daphne Still serve as the Barnwell County School District coordinators for the program. Please do not hesitate to reach out to them if you have any questions or concerns at all.

Tonya Coleman, BCSD Support Staff Member of the Year, ISS Teacher, Coach & Mentor

I believe I work with dedicated education professionals at BCSD. This is where I have successfully collaborated with supportive faculty and staff at Blackville-Hilda to champion student engagement. I am passionate about partnering with fellow educators to cultivate a safe, inclusive, and dynamic learning environment that drives student success.

Working in Barnwell County School District is more than a job, it’s an opportunity to serve, lead, and make a positive difference in the lives of our scholars every day. I’m especially proud to work alongside professional drivers who safely transport our precious cargo and make a difference one mile at a time.

April Smith, Kindergarten Teacher & BCSD Teacher of the Year

I was born, raised, and educated right here in Barnwell County. My roots run deep in this small town rural area where a family community exists across the entire district from campus to campus. I was blessed with many strong, talented teachers during my childhood right here in Barnwell County which ultimately led to me choosing education as a career and I hope and pray that I am blessing students with an eagerness for lifelong learning the same as they did for me.

Cathy Smith, Career Specialist

I have absolutely loved working at Williston-Elko High School for 22 years! Working in a small community environment has so many advantages! We are truly a family here and it has given me the opportunity to build so many relationships with students and families. I feel these close ties truly help build a strong foundation to personally help students on their path to success!
