Barnwell County School District Prepares to Add New Electric Buses to Its Fleet

Barnwell County School District is preparing to welcome five new electric school buses to its transportation fleet. The buses, funded through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Clean School Bus Program will begin serving students once final inspections and approvals are complete.

The addition of the buses marks the completion of a project that began in 2022 when the district was awarded nearly $2 million through the EPA's Clean School Bus Program. The new buses will replace older vehicles in the fleet while providing students with modern, air-conditioned transportation.

“The transportation department is very excited this year about our new Electric buses," stated Director of Transportation, Chantane Tobin.  “We have been trained on how to drive them and recharge them once we return back on the lot.  We know our kids are going to be excited to ride the new buses also.  It will be a new experience to plug into a system to charge a battery to move a big bus instead of fueling it with diesel and be on your way to pick up our precious cargo!

The electric buses offer several advantages, including quieter operation, reduced emissions, lower fuel and maintenance costs, and an improved riding experience for students.

BCSD Chief Officer of Operations, Mike Beasley, said, “Our goal is simple: provide safe transportation for students today while making decisions that benefit our community for years to come.  Electric buses help us do both.”

Additional information, including the routes that will utilize the new buses, will be shared with families once the buses are approved for operation.

Every Student Matters. Every Moment Counts.
