Williston-Elko Middle School Brings Local History to Life During Social Studies Family Engagement Night
WILLISTON, S.C. -September 3, 2026 — Williston-Elko Middle School students and their families stepped into the community’s past during the school’s Social Studies Family Engagement Night, held September 2 at The Williston Museum.
The event provided an engaging opportunity for families to explore Williston’s history together while connecting classroom learning to the people, places and events that helped shape their community.
Throughout the evening, students and family members interacted with museum displays and examined artifacts representing life in earlier generations. Exhibits featuring rotary telephones and telephone switchboards sparked conversations about how communication has changed over time, while displays documenting the history of Williston helped attendees gain a deeper appreciation for their hometown and its development.
Families also explored exhibits highlighting areas such as agriculture, transportation, industry and education. The hands-on setting encouraged students to ask questions, share discoveries and see how local history connects to the broader concepts they study in social studies.
By moving learning beyond the classroom, the event demonstrated how community resources can make academic content more meaningful and memorable for students. It also created an opportunity for families to participate actively in their children’s education while learning more about the community they call home.
Principal Dr. Patricia Ulmer stated, “Williston-Elko Middle School extends its appreciation to The Williston Museum for welcoming its students and families and helping bring local history to life. The school also thanks the families, educators and staff members whose participation made the evening a success.”
The Social Studies Family Engagement Night reflected Barnwell County School District’s continued commitment to strengthening connections among our schools, families, and community while providing meaningful and enriching learning experiences that bring education to life for every student.
