On Tuesday, October 14th, Barnwell County Career Center (BCCC) Future Farmers of America (FFA) President, Davis Coble, was awarded the South Carolina Association of State Fair Scholarship for our region. This prestigious scholarship is highly competitive, with FFA members from across the state applying each year. Only one student from each of South Carolina’s four regions is selected annually.

Applicants are evaluated based on a comprehensive application process, which includes an essay detailing their Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) project and FFA involvement, submission of five photos with captions highlighting their FFA and SAE activities, and reporting their GPA and Agriculture Education GPA. Davis was awarded a $500 scholarship, which can be used for college expenses or reinvested into his SAE project.

Davis’s SAE project, Palmetto Poultry LLC, began as a personal passion for animals and, within two years, has grown into a small business. Palmetto Poultry offers chickens, turkeys, quail, and occasionally ducks and geese, with products including eggs, chicks, full-grown birds,  harvested/processed quail, and startup quail boxes. Davis breeds a variety of chickens, maintaining healthy and beautiful birds. His project also serves an educational purpose. Davis keeps chickens at Barnwell County Career Center and Barnwell High School and shares eggs and incubators with other schools in the district, giving students hands-on experience in agriculture in the classroom activities.

“We are incredibly proud of Davis for his dedication to both his SAE project and the effort he put into this scholarship application and essay,” said FFA Advisor Desiree Still. “His hard work, entrepreneurship, and commitment to agriculture education are truly commendable.”
